A split calculator is a financial tool that divides the total amount of a shared expense among a group and calculates what each person owes.
The math behind an even split is one division: the total amount ÷ the number of people. Real group expenses rarely stay that simple. One friend pays the hotel, another covers fuel, and two people skip the wine. A bill splitting calculator records each payment, works out every person's fair share, and subtracts what each person already paid. The result is a short list of settlement amounts instead of a pile of IOUs.

Enter the total amount of each expense in the Amount field, for example $240 for dinner. Include tax and tip in the total, if the whole group shares them. Pick the currency first: the calculator formats USD, EUR, GBP, INR, PKR, JPY, AUD, CAD, SGD and AED.
Type each person's name and press Add. The number of people sets the divisor for an even split. The calculator needs at least 2 people and has no upper limit, so a group of 12 works the same way as a group of 2.
Choose who shares each expense by ticking names under Split between. Leave everyone ticked for an even split. Untick the people who did not share a cost, such as friends who skipped the wine, and the calculator divides that expense among the remaining people only.
Press Calculate settlement to see each person's share and balance. The results display lists every payment needed, for example “David pays Alice $60”. Use Copy summary or Share on WhatsApp to send the result, and Start over to reset the calculator.

What each friend paid
The split calculator uses 3 formulas: the equal split formula, the percentage split formula, and the custom split formula. Each formula returns what each person pays, and one final step subtracts what each person already paid.
Each person pays = Total amount ÷ Number of people
The equal split formula divides the total amount by the number of people. A $300 dinner for 4 people costs $75 per person.

Person's share = Total amount × Person's % ÷ 100
The percentage split formula multiplies the total amount by each person's agreed percentage. The percentages must add up to 100%. A 60/40 split of $2,000 rent gives $1,200 and $800.

Person's share = Total amount × Person's weight ÷ Sum of all weights
The custom split formula divides the total by weights such as income, room size or usage. Take pre-allocated amounts off the total first. For rooms of 200, 150 and 100 sq ft, the largest room pays 200 ÷ 450 = 44.4% of the rent.

Balance = Amount paid − Fair share
A positive balance means the person is owed money. A negative balance means the person owes money.

There are 4 ways to split an expense: split equally, split by percentage, split by custom amounts, and split based on individual expenses. The right method depends on how evenly the group used the shared item.
An even split gives every person the same share. Use it for group meals, shared rides and subscription splits, where everyone uses the item the same way. A $24.99 monthly streaming plan split 4 ways costs about $6.25 per person.
A percentage split assigns each person a fixed part of 100%. Couples often use a 60/40 or 70/30 split to match income. This income-based split keeps the rent burden fair when one partner earns more.
A custom split lets each person pay a set amount or a weighted share. Use weighted splits for a room size-based split, a usage-based split, or pre-allocated amounts, such as a roommate who already paid $100 toward the bill.

To split a restaurant bill with tip and tax, add the tax to the subtotal, calculate the tip, and divide the final total by the number of people.
A tip percentage in the US usually runs from 15% to 20% of the pre-tax subtotal. Calculating the tip on the pre-tax amount keeps the tip fair to the diners, and the calculator splits the result to the cent.
Split only part of the bill, if some people ordered more. Add shared plates as one expense for everyone, then add drinks as a separate expense for the people who drank. Tax and tip proration follows the same rule: each person pays tax and tip on their own part.

Roommates split rent in 3 common ways: an even split, a room size-based split, and an income-based split.
The American Community Survey (ACS) from the US Census Bureau put the US median gross rent at $1,406 a month in 2023, and 49.7% of renter households spent 30% or more of their income on housing. In expensive cities and large US metropolitan areas, splitting rent among roommates keeps that rent burden down.
A room size-based split charges each roommate by floor area. For a $3,000 apartment with rooms of 200 sq ft (18.6 m²), 150 sq ft (13.9 m²) and 100 sq ft (9.3 m²), the rooms pay $1,333.33, $1,000 and $666.67. Add $50 to $150 a month for a private bathroom or a balcony, if the group agrees.
Household expenses such as utility bills, internet and groceries change every month. Add each bill with the roommate who paid it and settle once a month. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) publishes free guides on managing shared finances at cfpb.gov.
To split travel expenses, record every cost with the person who paid it and the people who shared it, then settle the trip once at the end.
Group travel expenses mix shared and personal costs. The hotel and the rental car cover everyone, while a diving trip or a spa day covers only some people. Split each expense among the people who used it, and every balance stays correct.
Multi-currency trips need one base currency. Convert each receipt to the base currency (USD, Euro, GBP, INR, CAD or AUD) at the rate on the day of payment, then enter the converted amount.
